We have dealt with the Caret drones, and script, a number of times since it cropped in mid-2007, as they accrete strange, new elements (including the dubious honour of a Whitley Strieber endorsement), inspired creativity and yet no adequate solution has emerged beyond "its them damn aliens again" and "someone is yanking our collective chains" (I lean towards the latter). The idea that just about anything mysterious is a viral ad usually crops up at some point, especially when no other obvious explanation arises. However, this angle rarely pans out as virals have to have a well timed trajectory so the 'reveal' arrives to maximise publicity for the launch of whatever it is that is being promoted. So it is interesting to hear that a really solid argument has emerged to suggest the Caret drones are actually a viral ad.
In “Earthlings Welcome Here”, the mid-season finale of the Terminator spin-off TV series the Sarah Connor Chronicles, the drones make various appearances, most explicitly at a UFO conference where they appear on posters and photos of them are seen. This all builds up the conclusion when the big daddy of all drones hoves into view. Cut to fade. Here is one of the screenshots of the last scenes of the show with a drone photo for comparison (for more see Screen Rant)

Here is a clip from Fox which clearly shows some of the script in the first few seconds and the drone at the end:
We are in a bit of a chicken and egg situation, as they could be tying the cliffhanger into the drone mythos but the lead time on this might be tricky, as they'd need to have had everything in place (script and vehicle designs) at least a year ago. We also need to keep in mind the writer's strike which could have put the production back months (it stretched from early November 2007 to mid-February 2008), in fact it could have thrown off the timing of the 'reveal' - nothing spoils the moment than being shooting your bolt early (so I'm reliably informed).
The show returns in February and it looks like we'll have a bit of a wait to see how things unfold but I think the case for this being connected to the series is pretty solid so far. Also keep in mind that Terminator 4 is out in May and it'd be interesting to see if they pick up any elements from the TV series, although I am unsure how closely the elements of the franchise work together (for example, if there is a well defined "canon").
Alien Casebook has more video. Update: Which didn't last long but, thanks to Eileen from Alien Casebook's comment below, you can watch it here.

Update
I'll keep things updated here with any extra information/discussion:
- The Drone Research Team have a thread on this. They are the group that have been really putting a lot of time and effort into investigating this (including hiring investigators to track down the locations)
- Drone Hoax.com - nothing on TSCC drones yet but I picked up the link via the main Screen Rant page so I assume they are beavering away
Update 2
Well the word from the Fox SFX folks has arrived and it is.... not a viral:
I'm not sure if this will put an end to this but I will assure you that the incorporation of drone-like imagery into TSCC should not in any way suggest there was/is a relationship between the original drone images and our show. The drone images are as much a puzzle to me as to anybody else...Maybe more so, as my obsession with their mysterious origins led me to go on and on about them in the writers' room...So much so that we ultimately used the mystery as a platform for "Earthlings Welcome Here."
It never occurred to me that anyone would use their inclusion in our show to cast any doubt onto the drones authenticity. They may be a hoax--it's ultimately a matter of faith for many--but the fact that the drones are discussed on TSCC is only a testament to their hold on my imagination.
...
Se ya'll back on the air Feb 13th.

So it looks like there are may be two up shots of this:
- It looks like I as right about the problem of explaining things away as simply virals, the added bonus is that this should be the very last time anyone suggests it for this case (and hopefully people will think twice before trying that again) as each new project (X-Files 2, Alienware, Halo, etc., etc.) came and went without the reveal.
- Now would be the ideal time to for the fakers to cash in on this. Alienware didn't really offer a big enough cash cow to milk but Fox brings the big bucks. You would think that they must have bolted everything down with their corporate ambulance chasers but I am not so sure a public domain excuse can work - that'd be like claiming an open air performance made a play's script fair game (although see JW Lewington's comments below). Of course, as motivation in these things can be tricky to pin down but surely whatever was being planned with the drones must be over, as it has faded away (if they wanted to prove they could do it, then job done). However, it might be premature to say "Ker-ching" and all that assumes it is a fake, of course

So it looks like this bad boy still has legs, stay tuned for further developments.
