Is the SuperPope a Catholic?

Apparently he is. As you might have guessed.

Whether SuperBear shits in the woods is something I'll leave for a rainy day.

Instead we'll ponder other matters - like what are the religious affiliation of superheroes? Not something I'd given much thought to (being a Godless heathen) but clear some people have as there is a comprehensive guide at Adherents.com.

Which sets one's mind to wondering if there is any greater significance that can be read into all this. For example:

Why so many Catholics? Guilt?
Why so few atheists amongst heroes but they are well represented amongst the villians?
Was J. Jonah Jameson born with his religion or converted at a later date?
Why are Sikhs only really represented amongst the sidekicks/supporting characters?
Do all Green Lanterns have to be Catholic?
If so does this suggest the Guardians are really leprechauns atfer returning to the Old Country? OK so they were actually Little Blue Men.

They also have some guides to the religious influences of some comic creators but the pages of some CoW favourites Grant Morrison and Alan Moore are a little thin considering they are the one's to make most explicit use of the medium for their own, magic(k)al, purposes. It is also a pity that British comic characters are ignored - just thinking about 2000AD we have explicitly (Catholic) religious figures like Devlin Waugh and Canon Fodder.

Anyway plenty to ponder on there and I'll be keeping an eye open for this kind of angle in the future.

I have to admit, I've never really pondered the subject that much. That being said, it's certainly interesting and is a really good source! I just wish they had alphabetised the list - it would have made it easier to navigate.

Why so many Catholics? Perhaps a larger proportion of Catholics become artists in some capacity or other having been surrounded by all that art in church!

Yes I suppose that also goes some way to explaining why there seem to be so many Irish policemen. Or is that just on TV and fillums?

One thing I've noticed, after going through it another time, I can't find any reference to any indigenous Australian characters such as 'Gateway'.
