A couple of times I have touched on the links between appearances of the BVM and strange electrically-charged mists. Nick Redfern follows up on his previous post with another case of weird mist on Cannock Chase (with a UFO and humanoids taking samples) With all this mist "in the air" (sorry) I thought it worth looking at the three cases that Vallee focuses on: Fatima, Lourdes and Guadalupe.

Fatima:

On June 13th, the children returned. This time fifty witnesses watched as the three knelt in prayer and the oldest, ten-year-old Lucia, addressed an unseen entity whose answers were unheard by anyone other than Lucia and her two young companions. One witness reported hearing a faint voice or beelike buzzing. At the end of the dialogue, witness heard an explosion and saw a small cloud rise near a tree.

Forty-Five hundred witnesses joined the three children near the same tree in the same pasture on July 13th. This day several witnesses reported "a buzzing or humming" sound, a decrease in the suns glow and heat, a small whitish cloud about the tree of the apparitions, and a loud noise at the Lady's departure.

Lourdes:

“There came out of the interior of the grotto a golden-colored cloud, and soon after a Lady, young and beautiful, exceedingly beautiful, the like of whom I had never seen,” explained Bernadette. “She looked at me immediately, smiled at me and signed to me to advance, as if she had been my mother. All fear had left me but I seemed to know no longer where I was."

Guadalupe:

The ravished Indian squinted his eyes to scan the hilltop, when to his utter astonishment, a cloud glowing with dazzling whiteness appeared just above the crest, while a magnificent rainbow formed by its resplendent rays emblazoned everything around it. Then, abruptly, the celestial singing ceased. A voice was heard from within the cloud. It was the voice of a young woman, a tender voice, calling his name most affectionately, "Juanito, Juan Dieguito."

Vallee has drawn out a table of comparisons between religious phenomena and UFO encounters he detailed in Passport to Magonia (Table 2, pages 174-178) which you can find here.

He also quotes from Apocrypha:

And they stood in the place of the cave, and behold a luminous cloud overshadowed the cave. And the midwife said: My soul has been magnified this day, because my eyes have seen strange things—because salvation has been brought forth to Israel. And immediately the cloud disappeared out of the cave, and a great light shone in the cave, so that the eyes could not bear it. And in a little that light gradually decreased, until the infant appeared, and went and took the breast from His mother Mary. And the midwife cried out, and said: This is a great day to me, because I have seen this strange sight. And the midwife went forth out of the cave, and Salome met her. And she said to her: Salome, Salome, I have a strange sight to relate to you: a virgin has brought forth—a thing which her nature admits not of.

And, behold, a new miracle. There appeared above the bier a cloud exceeding great, like the great circle which is wont to appear beside the splendour of the moon; and there was in the clouds an army of angels sending forth a sweet song, and from the sound of the great sweetness the earth resounded. ... And the angels who were in the clouds smote the people with blindness.

Let's not forget Moses (Exodus 24:15-18):

And Moses went up into the mount, and a cloud covered the mount.
And the glory of the LORD abode upon mount Si'nai, and the cloud covered it six days: and the seventh day he called unto Moses out of the midst of the cloud.
And the sight of the glory of the LORD was like devouring fire on the top of the mount in the eyes of the children of Israel.
And Moses went into the midst of the cloud, and gat him up into the mount: and Moses was in the mount forty days and forty nights.

If, as some believe, this is some kind of extra/ultra-terrestrial communicating some other worldly wisdom then one can only wonder what the purpose of the Ark of the Covenant was. All we really know is it kicks Nazi ass. Or was that a film?

So now I open the floor. Do you have any other interesting cases of weird phenomena connected with odd mists? Then throw them in here and we'll prod them with stacks and generally stand around pondering them and stroking our beards (if we have any. If not a National Health beard can be provided).

I'll get the ball rolling with some:

Aarno Heinonen and Esko Viljo from 1970:

They had been standing in the glade for about 5 minutes when they heard a buzzing sound, and caught sight of a very strong light moving through the sky. It approached from the north, made a wide sweep, and came at them from the south, descending as it came. The faint buzzing sound became louder. The light halted, and then they could see that a luminous red-grey mist was swirling round it. Puffs of smoke were thrown up from the top of the cloud.

Heinonen went on to have a number of encounters with humanoids adn they both had a weird encoutner in a kichen in 1972 which sounds more like contacts with fairyfolk (the first entity had a conical hat) and there was even another cloud-based encounter later.

Found a few in Australia while trying to confirm another report (a bipedal elephant-type creature was seen in Narrabeen and there was talk of an unconnected UFO/mist sighting at a similar location)

Ca 1965 Sydney NSW 1900hrs
A strange pink cloud was reported. The woman then saw a snow white flying saucer. A shiny ladder was lowered from a hatchway and a man came down and sat on a rung of the ladder. He shone a beam of light into the sea. The ladder and man were retracted and the object sped off.

14 Dec 1971 Waikerie SA 2300hrs Yates/Schiller
Two young men saw an animate object of humanoid appearance floating through trees in a sort of mist, only some twenty metres away. It had a dog-like head, pointed ears and a long nose. It was some two meters tall with a lumpy body. The men moved to another point where they saw a large object, the size of a truck, resting on the ground. It was shaped like a half sphere and had windows. The object just dissolved away.

17 Oct 1977 Mt Magnet WA 2100hrs
A group of eight people went out to look for some lights which had reportedly landed near the town's rubbish dump. Upon arrival they saw round, pulsating, green and red lights. Around them appeared to be mist and something which appeared to be of human size was observed.

May 1982 Carlton Tas 2100hrs
A misty egg-shaped object was only one metre above the ground some fifteen metres away from a man. Described as two and a half metres tall by one and a half metres wide the object revealed a figure inside it. The figure seemed 175 centimetres tall, normally proportioned. The witness ran home. Looking backwards he saw the object had left.

10 Feb 1996 Huon Valley Tas
Witness woke in early hours to find room lit up by light. She had a feeling she must go outside. From there she saw that the source of light was a brilliant, long, elliptical shape 50m away in a paddock. Standing in the garden was a tall, thin figure estimated over 2m tall. The figure beckoned the witness with its left hand. The witness approached and then becoming afraid retreated. She threw some furniture from the verandah, at which point everything went dark as her companion came out to see what was going on.
About a week later, she awoke again and felt compelled to go outside. There was the figure, but no object. The same metallic smell was present. The 2m tall, thin figure seemed surrounded by a bright mist. It looked to be wearing a one piece, silver suit with a band around the waist. It had long, wrap-around eyes that sloped at the outside, and flat, pointed ears. Also present were two smaller rounded figures to either side. They were less than a metre tall, fat in the body with small arms and legs. They moved in a jerky fashion. The witness retreated into the house, despite a feeling she should follow the figure.

A four year old girl told her mother that "frogmen" came and visited her. Three figures came through window in a mist. They had big eyes, frog skin. Poked the girl. Scorch mark reported on lawn and tree foliage reported burnt.

Over on the FTMB there is an interesting story of a strange misty figure emerging from a canal and another Black Dog emerging from mist.

So what is the explanation?

It strikes me that we have three general classes of UFO (or UAP if you like):

1. Silvered craft


2. Sphere of light


3. Mist (often coloured)

They all seem to have the ability to change shape (and those with more clearly defined boundaries have been known to merge and split) and can move in ways that some have interpreted as having intent. They also seem to have some kind of electrical effect (often with a buzzing described) and can induce "Oz effects"

I've brainstormed some potential explanation

1. These are the various UAPs referred to in the MOD report that have some kind of electrical field that has some kind of effect on human minds (see the work of Budden)


2. They are completely separate phenomena (alien vehicles, earthlights and... well mists). The problem is they all seem to share weird effects and a wide range of associated strange phenomena


3. They are actually entities and the related phenomena is due to something like the effect caused by the Subanthropic Principle. Sci-fi is filled with non-corporeal entities that have either passed beyond the flesh stage of evolution or never even had to bother with it.


4. They are some kind of probe. It occurred to me that it may be easier for an advanced civilisation to send probes composed of pure energy. It might be able to exploit quantum effects and/or might avoid relativistic effects that probes with mass would encounter. That is assuming they are from our Universe. Theory suggests that parallel universes should be essentially closed off from each other. It may be that such a probe is more of a projection? If one sent a probe then one might also send instructions on how to build something to facilitate the next stage of communication (in a similar fashion to that in the film Contact). We might have an example of this with Moses and the Ark.

The answer?

Well I lean towards the first option but there are too many unknowns (like how are these things created and how do they effect the brain). So I have to reluctantly admit... I haven't the foggiest.
